Seventh Grade Retreat

Makayla Cheng

Catholic Schools Week, which we normally celebrate each school year, is coming up soon. It will officially commence on Sunday, January 30 at the Catholic Schools Week Mass. Not everyone is required to attend, considering the worry of COVID and the Omicron variant, but it is hopefully expected that many people can come.

As you may know, Catholic Schools Week will be filled with fun events each day of the week. If you may recall from the previous years, there were some activities like Pajama Day, Crazy Hair Day, Grandparents’ Day, and more. Last year, due to COVID, Catholic Schools Week was fairly different from the years past. This year, COVID is still going on, but Catholic Schools Week this year may be a bit more similar to the ones from years ago. Because of this celebration, I decided to interview Ms. Vollert, so we could have some more information on what is happening during Catholic Schools Week.

Q: What are some events that will take place during Catholic Schools Week?

A: There are many events that take place during Catholic Schools Week (CSW), starting with our Mass and Open House this Sunday, January 30th at 10:00am.

Q: What is your favorite part of Catholic Schools Week? Why?

A: I really enjoy the CSW Mass. We are able to come together as a parish and school community to celebrate St. Anne School as a community.

Q: What were some of your ideas for Catholic Schools Week that you decided to leave out?

A: Some activities that we decided to leave out were specific dress days (for example, cartoon day, Disney day, and twin day). The one day that I would have liked to see was Dress Like Your Parents Day, but unfortunately that was not chosen either.

Q: Are there any events that were left out because of COVID? What are they, if any?

A: Yes, the main event that we usually hold during CSW is Grandparents’ Day. We decided to cancel it this year because of the rise of Covid (especially Omicron) cases.

Q: Is there anything new being added to Catholic Schools Week? What are the new additions, if there are any?

A: Yes, we usually have some sort of Service Day, we are still having a Service Day, but we are adding a 1-day sock drive! We are also having some sort of class activity outside that is being planned by Mr. Josias and Mr. Campbell.

Q: How is Catholic Schools Week this year different from the one last year?

A: Well, last year, we were hybrid learning (some students here at school and some at home), so we had our CSW Mass during the week via zoom. And almost all of our activities were either virtual or cancelled. This year, we are “almost” back to normal with our events and activities.

As you can see, the school faculty is working hard to plan Catholic Schools Week for us. Though COVID gets in the way of our annual school events, we can get through it. After all, we are getting closer to our normal way of school, compared to last year with hybrid learning. Well, I hope you have a great Catholic Schools Week!

Third Quarter Wrap-Up

Makayla Sy

On behalf of the third quarter coming to an end on Thursday, March 24, I decided to write an article summing up what had happened during this quarter. I will go through each of the main subjects and summarize what seventh grade has worked on during this period of time.

First off is English Language Arts. We worked on an essay that displays a fictionalized scenario of “Where would you move the capital if you were the leader of a political party?” The objective was to think strategically from the perspective of the leader of either the Lemicrats (or Democrats) or Republicoons (or Republicans). Other than that, we have also taken two tests in preparation for the upcoming trip to Washington, D.C. Those tests were on the Executive Branch and the Legislative and Judicial branches (with those two branches combined in one test). Currently, we are learning about the Constitution itself and the ways in which you can amend it.

During reading class, we have been working on an essay. The prompt is to choose a specific person from the time of World War II or the Holocaust and write a biography about them. Along with that, we are also required to prepare a presentation and a tri-fold.

In social studies class, we are starting off lessons on the Great Depression to prepare ourselves for the D.C. trip. We have done a small group activity on sorting different words and phrases regarding the Great Depression into different categories. Now, we are working on analyzing pictures that were taken during the Great Depression.

Lastly is math class. We have just finished chapter six of our math textbook, which was about percentages. We are learning a bit about the Korean and Vietnam Wars to get ready for the trip.

In conclusion, this is a short summary of what had occurred in the third quarter in seventh grade.
