The Wide World of Extended Care

Mikayla Cheng and Annika Watkins

Today we are going to be interviewing the Extended Care staff. Extended Care is a place where students from kindergarten through eighth grade can go if their parents are unable to pick them up at dismissal. Extended Care is held everyday from 3:00-6:00, with the exception of 12:30 dismissal days, and Mondays when students get out at 2:00. There are a variety of activities available to students. To name a few, you can do art, go to Homework Club, go outside, and play with toys and games Mr. Campbell, the director, provides. WIthout further adieu, let’s get on with the interview.

Name: Carlos

How did you find out about St. Anne Extended Care?: I heard about it from two of my friends, Bernadette (a current EC worker) and Kari.

What’s your favorite part about working here?: Helping kids

What’s your favorite activity to run?: Outside and Homework Club

Name: Bernadette

How did you find out about St. Anne Extended Care?: My friend had worked at St. Anne Preschool for two years and she offered me to work here.

What’s your favorite part about working here?: Hanging out and talking with the kids.

What’s your favorite activity to run?: Art because it’s the most chill activity. Also, the kids sometimes make art for me which is sweet.

Name: Andrew

How did you find out about St. Anne Extended Care?: Mr. Campbell and I go way back. We’re good buddies. I’ve also had a history of working with kids.

What’s your favorite part about working here?: The students. I wouldn't work here if it wasn’t for them.

What’s your favorite activity to run?: Art. All the kids are so creative and I love seeing what they make.

Name : Mr. Campbell

How did Extended Care start?: It started before I got here. I was the 3rd director, and it mostly started through the needs of the parents. They wanted their kids to have a safe place to go after school when they couldn’t take care of them.

How did you become the moderator?: I started off as St. Anne’s PE teacher. Mr. White was the one who offered me the job in 2001. Ever since then I’ve been moderating EC.

What is your favorite part about running Extended Care?: My favorite part is getting to see the other side of the students. When I’m directing PE, I act as a PE teacher. At Extended Care however, everyone is a bit more loose and shows their true side when not in class. I also adore my staff. The 8th grade is also entertaining to watch. When St. Anne graduates come back to visit, it brings me joy. Simply put, I enjoy watching kids be kids.

What is something you look for in an employee?: I look for outgoing, responsible, personable, independent individuals who are willing to work with children of varying ages.

Talent Show Interview

 Joshua Lee

Tryouts on the St. Annes talent show started on February 24th. The talent show can range from dancing, singing, comedy, or any other performance to show off their skills. I decided to interview one of the students who wanted to participate in the talent show. His name is Robert Pon, an 8th-grade student. In this interview, you'll know what happened during the tryouts and his thoughts on performing.

Q: So Robert, how many people tried out for the talent show, and how many got accepted?

A: I would estimate that about 20 people were there at the tryouts.  It isn’t known how many got accepted or will be accepted.  Time will have to tell.

Q: For tryouts, were you judged as you performed on stage, or did something else happen?
A: The tryouts were held in the Spanish classroom and I was the last one to try out, so it was only Mr. White.  It would’ve been cool if it was on stage down in the hall, but the classroom was just fine.

Q: What are you doing for the talent show?
A: Come and watch on March 24th :)  Until then, I choose to keep what I’m doing a secret.

Q: Did it proceed smoothly or were there some issues?
A: For me personally, everything went smoothly and I performed well.  However, what surprised me most was just how many people were unprepared.  I was rushing to practice and get everything done by the due date to the point of missing assignments because the form said, “You MUST be prepared for tryouts by February 24th and 25th, or we will ask you to try again next year.” Even with such specific directions and requirements, a vast majority of the participants barely understood what they were doing.  The extra weird thing is that it was treated as if that was perfectly ok.  If I had known how low the standards were, I could’ve come in with half the act done and spent more time on schoolwork and everything would’ve been fine.  Not only that, but the form also said that you had to send the lyrics to Mr. White before tryouts if you were using a song, which clearly didn’t happen.  I made sure that my act had no bad words in it and it was family-friendly.  However,  I was still told to try to change a phrase I said before coming back

Q: Did you yourself get accepted?
A: I’m pretty sure that I did.  Mr. White said that I was good to go as long as I changed a line.

Q: Are you nervous performing in front of people?
A: No, actually.  I’ve become really comfortable with the idea of performing over the past couple of years and have come to enjoy it.  Plus, if I mess up or do something wrong, I’m confident that I can recover and if I can’t, no one will remember it anyway.

Q: What made you want to participate in the talent show?
A: I had been working on several musical projects prior to it being announced and it would’ve felt like a waste if I never performed any of it.  Plus, it would be a chance to express myself and I value opportunities like that.  I think that everyone, at some point, has had a desire to get up on stage and do something impressive in front of people, and the talent show is a perfect place to do that.

Prowess Pageant

Amelie Huynh

The school talent show is on March 24th, according to our principal, Mr. White. Everyone will get a chance to show off their skills. There will be all kinds of performances like dancing, acting, martial arts, or music, showcased by our wonderful students (Don’t worry, everyone’s wonderful, even the people not participating!). This will be your chance to present what makes you awesome, so if you want to show everyone how talented you are, fill out a form and bring it to Mr. White! We all want to see what you’re a master at, which you could show us in the special St. Anne Talent Show! All that practice you had using that skill will pay off in the talent show because it’s cool and people will shower you in applause and cheering. If you are shy but want to display your mastery at a passion, join the talent show, but pretend that everyone in the crowd is not there; I mean don’t pay attention to the crowd. Or, you could just act like you’re in a practice session. This can help to do well while also fending off shyness. Remember that St. Anne’s is a kind community where your friends won’t laugh at you; a real friend won't laugh at you unless you’re trying to make them laugh with a joke or some hilarious acting. Whether you use the tips I recommended or use your own, you’ll be wowing the crowd with your awesomeness because everyone here is awesome and talented.
