New Mask Mandate

Mikayla Cheng

These past two years have truly been a struggle for us all. COVID-19 was an unexpected disease that nobody predicted would grow this bad. The first signs of the virus started rising in China in late 2019 to early 2020. It spread quicker than anybody would have expected. With little time to prepare, airports and other big worldly businesses shut down due to health concerns. Wearing masks was also a new rule that everyone around the world was strongly advised and even forced to follow.

Masks have multiple functions. They keep you and everyone around you safe by stopping respiratory droplets from reaching others. Of course, it’s not a hazmat suit that will keep you 100% safe all the time. Some people would wear hazmat suits if they could, but it would be a constant hassle. While masks are not a complete safety guarantee, they do boost your chances of staying secure during this unsettling time. There are many different kinds of masks, each offering different benefits. For example, there are cloth masks, paper masks, surgical masks, and N95 masks. They’ve done their part in trying to protect us from this nasty contagion.

Though recently, the Center of Disease Control has come to a conclusion that wearing masks is a smart idea, but they deem it no longer mandatory due to the state of the pandemic. Forget your mask at home? Don’t fret; you don’t have to rush back to grab it. While it is still a highly recommended safety precaution, you won’t be told to wear one when entering a public space. It may seem crazy during such a crazy time in our lives, and for the most part this idea is correct. COVID is still not over. However, the fact that the CDC, a well respected government institution, has decided that wearing masks is not obligatory anymore seems like a big step in the right direction towards getting back to normal.

Turning the Time Forward

On the 13th of April most of the United States of America moved their clocks ahead one hour. To know why this is, we need to know a little bit about daylight savings time. Daylight Savings is the term for when we move the clock forward an hour. It all started on May 1st, 1916. Germany used it as an effort to conserve fuel and “save daylight” by getting up an hour early and going to sleep an hour early. Since they would get up and go to bed early there would be more daylight hours to go around. Soon the rest of Europe would follow. This tradition soon came to America, but the idea was unpopular because farmers had less time in the morning to get their milk and harvested crops to market. President Franklin Roosevelt would instate a year round DST (daylight savings time) after WW2 that lasted till the last Sunday of September. It was adopted by many states even though it was not a federal law. At the beginning of 1962 the transportation industry found the lack of consistency confusing enough to push for federal regulation. So, in 1967 it was made into law, and would keep being modified for the next six decades. Daylight savings time allows us to wake up earlier and experience more daylight throughout the day. It also helps prevent car crashes by having people drive in brighter conditions instead of the dark. That is why daylight savings time was on the 13th, so if you feel more tired during the morning just know that you are saving daylight by waking up an hour earlier.

Need a new show to watch? A great show to watch would be Amphibia! It is a funny show that can be found on Disney Channel, DisneyNOW, and Disney+. Amphibia was created by Matt Braly and inspired by his family. It’s a show about a teenage girl named Anne Boonchuy who opens a box that sends her to a world of mostly frogs. At first, everyone thinks she’s a monster, but they eventually befriend her. She is cared for by the Plantar family which includes Sprig, a ten-year old frog, Hop Pop, or Hopadiah, their grandfather, and Polly, a tadpole and Sprig’s younger sister. Anne had two friends, Sasha and Marcy, who were also transported, but to different places. However, Anne is spotlighted in this show. Do you hate the fact that Asian actors are rarely chosen for shows? The actresses for Anne, Sasha, and Marcy (Brenda Song, Anna Akana, and Haley Tju) are Asian! Also, Anne herself is Thai American! Many of the aspects of Amphibia are based on Braly’s life. For example, Anne’s look was based on Braly’s grandmother's look when she was younger. Also, Anne has a cat named Domino, which is also the name of Braly’s cat.

Amphibia is one of my favorite shows. I think this because I love watching Anne and the Plantars’ adventures. I would recommend this show to people who love adventure shows and Disney, as it is a very good show. I’ve just started watching it, but I already love it. I’ve even started watching similar shows such as The Owl House and Big City Greens, which I’ve also liked.
